Now that CMS has expanded MA supplemental benefits to cover items addressing social determinants of health (SDoH)—including transportation and food-delivery services—there’s never been a better time for plans to start addressing SDoH.
Still, for many plans, uncertainty remains about exactly how and where to start with SDoH. After all, while social factors undeniably play a significant role in determining health outcomes, they haven’t traditionally been part of a health plan’s sphere of influence.
But, there is a clear path forward. With a few key strategies—like leveraging member data, forging new partnerships, and offering financial incentives—plans can reduce social barriers, engage hard-to-reach members, and begin to improve health outcomes.
